Why George Clooney Will Never Work With ‘Pathetic Bastard’ David O. Russell Again
The animosity between David O. Russell and George Clooney has not diminished over time.In a joint interview with his Wolfs co-star Brad Pitt that was published in GQ on Tuesday, the 63-year-old Oscar winner dubbed the 65-year-old director ‘a miserable f***’.
About 25 years after he and the volatile director Russell clashed on the production of the 1999 war film Three Kings, Clooney elaborated on the idea of time allotment when Pitt, 60, mentioned it in relation to working with individuals he wants to.
The native of Lexington, Kentucky, remarked, “As you age, time allocation changes significantly.” It’s a lot to take five months out of your life.
At this point in his life, Clooney remarked, “it’s not worth it” to sacrifice a worthy project in order to have a decent product. As a result, he is more selective about the people he works with.
Clooney stated: “There’s more to it than just saying, “Oh, I’m going to make a great movie like Three Kings, and I’m going to have a terrible time like David O. Russell making my life a living hell.” making life miserable for every member of the staff.”
In the October 1999 release of Three Kings, Clooney portrayed the lead character of Archie Gates. Based on the novel by John Ridley, the film also starred Ice Cube, Mark Wahlberg, Cliff Curtis, Nora Dunn, and Spike Jonze.
In a 2000 interview with Playboy, Clooney talked about his altercation with Russell, describing the film’s production as “truly, without exception, the worst experience of my life.”
During the interview, Clooney revealed that he wrote a letter to the director pleading with him to cool down for the sake of the production after seeing Russell verbally abuse staff members and humiliate them in front of others.
Later in the shoot, Clooney stated in an interview that Russell had become aggressive with an extra during a stunt and he had attempted to step in and diffuse the situation.
Clooney stated in the interview, “I went over and put my arm around him because I was trying to make things work.” “It’s a momentous day, David, I remarked.
However, you are not permitted to push, shove, or degrade someone who is unable to protect oneself.”Russell became verbally abusive at Clooney, according to Clooney, saying things like, “Why don’t you just worry about your f*****-up act?”
Clooney went on: “Hit me, you p***y,” he said. Strike me. I lost it when he grabbed me by the throat. One of the boys, Waldo, was my pal, and he grabbed me by the waist to make me release him. I had his throat clenched. I intended to murder him. Murder him. At last, he expressed regret, but I turned away.
The Warner Bros. guys were freaking out by that point. We completed the film, but David kind of pouted during the remainder of the filming. All in all, it was the worst experience of my life.
In an October 2004 interview, Russell said, “I never physically attacked Clooney,” according to The Guardian, denying ever touching the actor. I would yell, “Shut the f*** up, you lying-a** b****,” if I ran across him.In a 1999 interview with Entertainment Weekly, Clooney stated of Russell, “His writing is unique and interesting because he’s a weirdo and hard to talk to.”
At a Hollywood event, Clooney approached Russell, and the two appeared to be on solid basis, the actor told The Hollywood Reporter in 2012.
“A few weeks ago, David and I met at a party. and I was driven to approach and ask, “So, are we done?” He then says, “Please.” And I replied, “All right.” We had a pretty difficult time together and made a really fantastic movie, but as we get older, that’s just how things are.
“I think he appreciates what I’m trying to do, and I really do appreciate the work he continues to do.”
