Drew Barrymore Apologizes for Her ‘Blackout Drinking’ History: “I Place Myself in Unsuitable Situations”
The actress talked about how the subject matter of Zoë Kravitz’s film “Blink Twice” “affected” her “personally.”
Drew Barrymore is disclosing how Blink Twice gave her the opportunity to think back on her history.
On Tuesday, September 10, the actress spoke with Zoë Kravitz on her daytime talk show. Kravitz, who is directing her first film, Blink Twice, and the actress discussed how the thriller “really affected me personally.”

“Substances are a major theme in the movie. Barrymore, 49, remarked, “I was shocked to realize that part of my journey that I was looking for, the trauma inside of me and what is it about, was that I used to be a blackout drinker.”
She continued by saying that seeing the film “was an extraordinary journey for me to forgive myself, because I’ve put myself in situations I shouldn’t have put myself in.”
“And I felt so much shame about that, and I haven’t had a drink in five years,” remarked Barrymore. Speaking of Blink Twice, Barrymore said to Kravitz, 35, “It is not only a film about the things that can happen to us, but it made me think about the things we’ve done to ourselves.”

“When you made it, was there any part of you that knew it? why so many messages are being raised here,” the woman remarked.
“Yes, absolutely,” Kravitz replied, before going on to say, “I think the substances were more of a way to get the characters to the most vulnerable place possible.” It is quite simple for things to get out of control when you lose yourself and let go of yourself.”
“To your point as well, when we allow ourselves to be in those kind of situations there is so much shame when we get to the other side,” she concluded. “So we make mistakes, we hurt ourselves, we get hurt by others and then often times we are left to deal with the consequences on our own.”
“There’s always that feeling or idea [of], ‘Well you drank it, you got on the plane, you wore the short skirt,’ and it’s just so much more complicated than that,” the Big Little Lies star revealed.

Her fiancé Channing Tatum plays Slater King in the film Blink Twice, which was also co-written by Kravitz. King is a software tycoon who is attempting to repair his reputation after being accused of misconduct.
Slater meets waitress Frida (Naomi Ackie) at a gala. With his raucous hangers-on (Christian Slater, Simon Rex, Haley Joel Osment, and Levon Hawke), he quickly whisks her, a friend (Alia Shawkat), and other women to his own island.
In August, Kravitz, who became engaged to Tatum, 44, last year, told PEOPLE that it was “awesome” to witness the man she loves play a villain.
“He was doing such a good job, and as an actor, I’m like, ‘This is delicious stuff that he’s never gotten a chance to do,’ ” the Batman actress continued. In addition, he is playing this role as an ally. He desires to narrate this tale.
