At NTA Awards, Kate Garraway makes moving statement in front of her children

With her kids by her side, Kate Garraway delivered a moving speech on Wednesday to win Derek’s Story’s best authored documentary award at the NTAs 2024.

The 57-year-old host of Good Morning Britain looked stunning in a bejeweled tuxedo at the awards, and her kids, Billy, 15, and Darcey, 18, wore matching ensembles.

Kate Garraway: Derek’s Story chronicles the final few months of her late husband Derek Draper’s life.Political lobbyist Derek, who contracted Covid-19 in 2020 and never fully recovered, passed away in January at the age of 56.

‘This is a bittersweet one isn’t it?’ Kate said as she started her poignant statement. Being here with the stunning Darcey and Billy makes me incredibly bitter.

I informed them that they were under no obligation to speak. Actually, the first year of firsts is halfway over.

“My first birthday and Easter without Derek.” Being here for the first Television Awards without him seems quite weird.

In the past, Derek starred in the documentaries Kate Garraway: Caring For Derek (2022) and Kate Garraway: Finding Derek (2021).

The NTAs were released after Kate told fans she is “so lucky” to have known Derek’s love on Tuesday in honor of their 20th wedding anniversary. She explained the significance of the day to her 1.3 million Instagram followers in a video that she posted.”Today would have been my 20th wedding anniversary to Derek,” she said.

“Well, it’s my twentieth wedding anniversary with Derek; it’s just one of those days that we’ve discussed, like Easter and Christmas to come.” His birthday is one of those occasions where you truly get a kick to the gut.

I’m afraid I’ve been feeling rather sorry for myself over this one in particular because it’s such a personal matter.

“This day is very special to him and me, but the others are just as much about the family, friends, and everything else that was there when he was here”

I feel incredibly sorry that he’s not here, and I sense his absence like a freight train.

Everyone says you have to lean into your sadness, and I’ve been doing just that. I’ve also been reading back some of his beautiful anniversary messages from past cards, and I feel so lucky to have experienced that type of romance and love in my life. I’m quite fortunate.

In an emotional plea to the viewers of Good Morning Britain earlier in September, Kate disclosed the abuse she had received following the publication of Derek’s Story.

In an admission made to Ed Balls and Lorraine Kelly, Kate said, “I haven’t posted I’ve been nominated yet because I got so much backlash from people saying stop going on about it.” But in all honesty, I know I’m disappointing folks.

One of the main things that frustrated him the most was that, despite all we said, he felt like a complete failure and an enormous burden on the system, the caregivers, and us. He wanted to contribute.

“It’s amazing to have the opportunity to honor him and the millions,” she continued. I feel guilty for abandoning the caring campaign, but I also believe that it would be wrong for me to do so. I’m upset that I can’t care for people anymore.

Strictly Come Dancing won Best Talent Show at the National Television Awards on Wednesday night, after a year full of scandals and controversy.

The BBC program defeated Britain’s Got Talent, The Great British Bake Off, Masterchef, and The Voice to win one of the night’s major prizes, raising concerns about the show’s survival in the wake of allegations of abuse directed towards professional dancers Giovanni Pernice and Graziano Di Prima.

The public casts votes for the NTAs, and Strictly’s victory indicates that, even as the show gets ready to return for its 20th series on Saturday night, fans are still supporting it.

The show’s creative team and professional dancers joined hosts Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman on stage as they accepted the gong.

In other news, ITV1’s This Morning was shocked to lose to fan-favorite The Chase for the coveted Daytime title.

“I feel incredibly fortunate to be able to share my work with you; I love it.” Some of it, maybe not all of it, may appeal to you. I know I’ve served several turkeys!

As the evening came to an end, Emmerdale was declared the winner of the Serial Drama category.
