After going through “a couple of rough weeks” following the deaths of her mother and sister, Mariah Carey says she’s “back at work”
After experiencing “a couple of rough weeks” following the simultaneous deaths of her sister Alison and mother Patricia last month, Mariah Carey said that she is returning to work.
In preparation for a number of forthcoming foreign gigs, Carey, 55, shared a photo of herself on Instagram on Sunday while she was practicing her song It’s Like That.

The five-time Grammy winner captioned the photo, saying, “Back at work.” Though it has been a difficult few weeks, I am incredibly grateful for everyone’s love and support and am looking forward to seeing my fans in China and Brazil. I cherish you!Carey said, “We’ll see you soon, China!” to the crowd in the video while dressed stylishly in all black. Carey will be performing in China on September 15 and 16, then will travel to Brazil on September 20 and 22.
Carey told People in a statement on August 27 that the string of family catastrophes was real.
“I lost my mother this past weekend, and I’m devastated.” Sadly, my sister passed away on the same day due to a tragic turn of events.
According to the publication, Alison was 63 years old when she passed away, while Patricia was 87. It was not immediately known what caused each person’s death or when they passed away.Mariah expressed her gratitude for having been able to “spend the last week” with her mother before she passed away.
‘I appreciate everyone’s love and support and their respect for my privacy during this tough time,’ she continued.
Before passing away at a New York home, Alison “had a tough life,” according to patient advocate David Baker, who spoke with People.
“We saw it coming, but it’s still a shock,” Baker continued. She fell ill really rapidly, and a month later, she passed away.
Before her mother and sister passed away last month, Mariah had difficult connections with both of them.
Alison was the middle child of the late Patricia and opera singer Alfred Carey (who passed away in 2002 at the age of 72). Mariah’s elder sister was Alison. The ex-couple, who are also the parents of 64-year-old son Morgan Carey, were married from 1960 to 1973, divorcing when Mariah was three years old.
In her biography The Meaning of Mariah Carey, published in 2020, Mariah wrote that her mother had given her “so much pain and confusion” and that “her therapist encouraged [her] to literally rename and reframe [her] family for [her] sanity and peace of mind.”
“My mother became Pat to me, my ex-brother Morgan, and my ex-sister Alison,” she stated. I had to give up on the idea that they would magically grow up to be the mother, big brother, and big sister I had always imagined.

Mariah stated she chose to break off communication with both Alison and Morgan following a protracted therapeutic process.
“I had to stop making myself available to be hurt by them,” Mariah continued. It’s been beneficial. Without a question, it is safer for me both physically and mentally to stay away from my ex-sister and ex-brother.
Mariah wrote in the book that Alison had ‘inflicted [her] with third-degree burns’ when she was a preteen, which had an influence on her development for the rest of her life. She also claimed that Alison would try to induce her to use drugs.
“My sister tried to sell me out to a pimp when I was 12 years old, drugged me with Valium, and offered me a pinky nail full of cocaine,” Mariah recalled. ”
All that trauma arrested something inside of me. I still struggle throughout that time, which is why I frequently say, “I’m eternally 12.”
During their upbringing, Mariah described Alison as “troubled and traumatized” in an interview with Oprah Winfrey from September 2020.
‘We don’t even truly know each other, and that’s the problem,’ the vocalist of Someday recalled. Though not together, we did grow up. I mean, they were traveling, and by the time I arrived on the scene, they were obviously damaged.
But once more, I wasn’t present. I felt like an outcast in my own family when I was first brought into this world.
In June 2005, a source revealed to the New York Post that Alison had “at least 10 rehab stays—many of which were funded by Mariah.”
According to an insider quoted in the story, “Mariah isn’t one to give up on people,” but she was “having to learn that you can’t help someone who doesn’t want to be helped.” Following the death of their father in 2002, “Mariah, especially, wanted a reconciliation,” a source informed the site.
An insider told the magazine, “She felt it was important to try and have something positive come out of an awful situation.” After their father passed away, Alison inherited $1 million, but she did not manage the money wisely.

A family insider told the newspaper, “When she got the money, she would spend a week and a half living at the St. Regis, racking up $15,000 in tabs.” The whole family was devastated to watch her destroy everything Alfred had spent his entire life pursuing. He had desired to see to Alison’s needs.
According to a source who spoke with the site, Alison went back to prostitution “about the time the money ran out.”
After being injured in a 2015 incident, Alison made a financial appeal to her well-known sibling in a video that was released by Dailymail.com in March 2016. “I love you, Mariah,” she exclaimed. I’m in serious need of your assistance. Please don’t leave me in this manner.
